Distance learning is not a modern day concept. It has been there since before the introduction of internet in the education sector. Colleges and universities have long conferred degree and diploma qualifications on individuals from far-flung areas. Students were supplied with study materials through postal system. There was neither e-learning system nor e-books to facilitate learning from a distance. Now the time has turned 360 degree leading to the internet dominated scenario. Learning in distance mode has come a long way to be known as online learning.
The advancement of e-learning as a much preferred mode of education overcoming all barriers has been possible because of instructional design system. Nigerian institutes have integrated instructional system design into their infrastructure for distance learning. It has introduced a revolutionary change in the system of teaching and learning. The whole concept of learning under traditional classroom instructions has undergone a sea change. E-learning courses and study materials for them are designed in instructional design systems.
Study online is a buzzword in the present e-environment. The pursuers of online study courses are delivered study materials in instructional design based formats like e-books. These online study material formats are highly technological and pragmatic. Most instructional design models are editable. They come with editing options and allow the users to edit the information in real time. Though, it is not face to face but interactive teaching &learning system. It is an index to the technological infrastructure of educational institutes conducting distance learning study programs.
Premier educational establishments in Nigeria are not far back when it comes to the modernization of distance learning system from the perspective of technology. The way they impart lessons to the online learners, communicate with them and deliver study materials to them has come of the age. Owing to the convenience of learning system that has resulted from the introduction of instructional design system, study online has emerged as a feasible mode for pursuing higher education. From this standpoint, Nigeria has made a mark in the global arena of education.
There is no stop to the development of instructional design system. It has been a high-end tool for the high learning institutes based in Nigeria. Distance learning in Nigeria owes its tremendous growth to the utility of instructional design technology. Today’s online learners are no less a techie. They find it convenient tostudy onlineas they are comfortable with the instructional design based learning system
